Nakuru Deputy Governor Defends Kihika’s Maternity Absence
Nakuru County’s Deputy Governor, David Kones, has firmly countered criticism surrounding Governor Susan Kihika’s prolonged absence.
He asserted that Kihika’s departure for maternity leave was conducted with proper protocol.
Kones emphasized that the county’s operations remain uninterrupted, as Kihika delegated her responsibilities to him.
“The Governor clearly communicated her departure to the USA for delivery. She issued a letter, widely circulated, entrusting me with the county’s affairs,” Kones explained. “She has full confidence in me and the county officers, ensuring no leadership void exists. I want to be very clear about this. People seem to want me to be loud and aggressive while she’s away. I’m her deputy, supporting her fully, 24/7.”
This defense comes after Nakuru resident Evans Kimori petitioned former US President Donald Trump, demanding Kihika’s deportation. Kimori alleged her five-month US stay, citing maternity leave, exceeded Kenya’s three-month legal limit.
“Governor Kihika, elected in August 2022, has been receiving maternity and newborn care in the USA for an extended period. While Kenyan law allows 90 days of maternity leave, she’s been away for nearly five months, creating a leadership vacuum,” Kimori’s letter stated.
Kones’s stance aligns with the Kenya Women Parliamentary Association (KEWOPA), which also defended Kihika against widespread criticism, including from Senator Tabitha Karanja.
In a recent press briefing, KEWOPA condemned the attacks as gender-biased, urging critics to allow Kihika time to recover after reportedly delivering twins in the US.
“We affirm Susan Kihika’s right to maternity leave, just like any other parent,” stated Kisii Women Representative Doris Donya. “We demand an end to gender-based attacks on Governor Kihika and all women leaders. We also call for respect for women leaders’ right to legally recognized maternity leave, free from political bullying, and a fair political environment.”
