Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna urges Kenya to respond firmly to Tanzania over alleged abuse of activists

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has called on the Kenyan government to take strong action against Tanzania following reports of torture and human rights violations against activists Boniface Mwangi and Agather Atuhaire.

Speaking on social media, Sifuna asked that Kenya ban leaders of Tanzania’s ruling party, Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), from entering the country.

He also suggested that President William Ruto’s government should move the East Africa Law Society (EALS) annual conference from Zanzibar. The event usually gathers over 800 lawyers from across East Africa to discuss business, network, and learn about new trends in law.

Sifuna added that Kenya should consider pulling out of the plan to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations with Tanzania and Uganda. This tournament is a major event planned by the three East African countries.

The senator also said President Ruto should cancel his recent apology and instead ask Tanzania to apologize.

At the National Prayer Breakfast on May 28, 2025, President Ruto apologized to neighboring countries for any past misunderstandings. He said, “Our neighbors from Tanzania, if we have wronged you in any way, forgive us. Our friends from Uganda, if there is anything that Kenyans have done that is not right, we want to apologize.”

Sifuna’s remarks come as human rights groups demand that Kenya and Uganda hold their governments responsible for the incident.

Houghton Irungu, Executive Director of Amnesty International, said, “We believe a private member’s bill in both countries should require the Ministries of Foreign Affairs to explain their role.”

He added, “We are not saying they have done anything wrong, but they must tell parliament what was done to protect Boniface and Agather and what steps will be taken after the terrible events we heard about.”
