Nairobi Police Officer Arrested After Shooting Unarmed Vendor During June 17 Protests

The police officer who shot an unarmed mask vendor during the demonstrations held in Nairobi on June 17, 2025, has been arrested.

The protests, which called for the resignation of Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat, turned into chaos after goons infiltrated the protesters.

In a shocking video that has sparked public outrage, two anti-riot officers were seen cornering the unarmed vendor on Moi Avenue, brutally beating him before firing at him from close range.

According to a statement from National Police Service Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga, an officer was taken into custody following orders from Police Inspector-General Douglas Kanja.

However, the Service chose not to disclose the officer’s name or provide a photo to confirm the arrest, which is typically standard practice.

The NPS also condemned a group of thugs wielding makeshift weapons, emphasizing that such individuals will face the full force of the law.

“Following this incident, the Inspector-General National Police Service has ordered the immediate arrest, investigation and arraignment in court of the involved officer. The said police officer has since been arrested,” the statement read in part.

“Furthermore, NPS has noted a group of goons armed with crude weapons, in today’s protests within the CBD. The Service takes great exception and does not condone such unlawful groupings.”

“Such individuals will be handled firmly, according to the law. Consequently, investigations have commenced to identify and deal with the criminals accordingly.”

The police department released a statement on Tuesday evening, confirming that the victim has been taken to the hospital and is currently receiving medical care.

This statement comes in the wake of a growing public outcry for justice regarding police brutality that has been highlighted in recent weeks. From the tragic murder of social media influencer Albert Ojwang while in police custody to the shocking close-range shooting of a hawker in Nairobi, the community is demanding accountability for those responsible.
