Nairobi City Council Workers Dump Garbage, Clamp Kenya Power Vehicles After Office Blackout
Nairobi City Council workers staged a dramatic protest outside Kenya Power’s headquarters, Stima Plaza, after electricity at their offices was disconnected.
The employees retaliated by dumping piles of garbage at the entrance and clamping several company vehicles, causing disruption.
According to sources, Kenya Power had disconnected the council offices due to unpaid electricity bills. This action angered the staff, who took matters into their own hands. “They cut off our power without any notice, yet we provide essential services to the city. We had to send a message,” said one of the protesting workers.
Eyewitnesses reported that the protest caused significant inconvenience, with blocked access to Stima Plaza and stranded Kenya Power employees unable to use the clamped vehicles. The situation escalated, drawing the attention of both the public and authorities.
Kenya Power officials have yet to issue a formal statement regarding the incident. However, sources inside the company suggested that the council had accumulated outstanding bills, leading to the drastic decision to disconnect their power supply.
City Hall officials, on the other hand, argued that the power cut was excessive and could have been resolved through dialogue. “There were better ways to handle this matter. Cutting off electricity to public offices affects service delivery,” one senior official stated.
By the end of the day, efforts were being made to resolve the dispute, with both parties engaging in discussions to prevent further escalation. Meanwhile, the garbage left outside Stima Plaza remained an unpleasant reminder of the protest.
