Mutahi Kagwe Poised for Cabinet Return as Ruto Eyes Key Appointment
President William Ruto is considering a significant reshuffle of his Cabinet to fill two vacant slots, with former Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe emerging as a key contender for the role.
Kagwe, renowned for his leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic, is being eyed to replace Kithure Kindiki, who was recently promoted to the Deputy President position from the Interior Ministry.
Sources close to State House have revealed that emissaries have been dispatched to engage with Kagwe, along with other influential leaders from the Jubilee Party, in a bid to strike a deal. The talks are aimed at facilitating Kagwe’s collaboration with the ruling Kenya Kwanza Alliance, marking a significant move in the country’s political landscape.
Local leaders from Nyeri, Kagwe’s political base, have already taken steps to support his potential nomination.
Thuo Mathenge, a former gubernatorial aspirant in the region, confirmed that a meeting would be held on Friday, November 22, to discuss Kagwe’s nomination and the broader political future of the region. “We have called a meeting in Nyeri on Friday to discuss the issue and the future of the region. We want to be in government,” Mathenge said.
The proposed nomination of Kagwe is seen as an effort to strengthen the government’s ties with the Central Kenya region, which has long played a pivotal role in national politics.
Leaders from Nyeri are eager to ensure their region’s presence in key government positions, and this move could be the stepping stone for a renewed political alliance between Central Kenya and the current administration.
As the discussions unfold, it remains to be seen whether Kagwe will take up the challenge of returning to government after his successful tenure at the Health Ministry.
His role in handling the pandemic has cemented his reputation, making him a strong candidate for the Cabinet position.
