Murkomen Responds Fiercely to Journalists Questioning His Ministry
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has strongly refuted recent criticisms targeting security agencies, which have questioned their effectiveness in combating banditry and terrorism.
During a National Police Service Development Partners Roundtable, Murkomen addressed media and social media criticisms directed at his ministry. He specifically responded to a headline labeling him a “Below Average CS,” defending the police and emphasizing the difficulty of their work.
Murkomen proposed a unique solution: transporting critics to police operational bases in troubled areas. He aims to provide a real-world perspective on the officers’ efforts. “It’s easy to criticize from behind a computer,” he stated, offering journalists a week-long stay in places like Elwak.
He argued that criticizing security operations is unfair, especially when officers are working hard to secure borders. “Interacting with these officers and local people will change your perspective,” he asserted.
These comments come amid escalating security concerns, including abductions and attacks on security personnel since Murkomen took office.
Recent incidents include an Al-Shabaab attack in Garissa, resulting in officer deaths and weapon seizures.
A separate attack in Mandera led to a police officer’s death, suspected to be retaliation for arrests related to a failed abduction.
Additionally, five chiefs were abducted in Mandera, potentially disrupting preparations for President Ruto’s visit.
Murkomen’s response highlights the tension between public scrutiny and the challenges faced by security forces in maintaining national safety.
