Mudavadi Breaks Silence After MP Peter Salasya Attacked at Nyayo Stadium
Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has strongly criticized the recent attack on Mumias East MP Peter Salasya, labeling the incident at Nyayo Stadium on Sunday, March 23rd, as deeply disrespectful.
Mudavadi, in a statement released on the day of the event, expressed his dismay, highlighting that the assault on Salasya fosters division. “What happened to Hon. Peter Salasya at Nyayo Stadium today is unfortunate. Political intolerance undermines the very foundation of our democracy, which relies on the ability to engage with differing views,” Mudavadi stated.
He further emphasized the necessity of respectful dialogue and national unity, regardless of political disagreements. “We won’t always agree, and that’s okay. But respect, dialogue, and unity must remain non-negotiable. Respect must be given, but it must also be earned. Fellow Kenyans, no one else will build this nation for us. If we let division win, we risk tearing down everything we hope to build,” he added.
Mudavadi urged Kenyans to prioritize reasoned discourse and maturity to safeguard the nation’s future and cohesion. “A house divided cannot stand. Let’s choose reason over chaos and maturity over noise. Kenya’s future depends on it,” he asserted.
The incident occurred during Kenya’s World Cup qualifier match against Gabon, attended by thousands. Salasya was forcibly removed from Nyayo Stadium following an altercation with a segment of the crowd.
Videos circulating online captured Salasya struggling against the irate crowd, who physically pushed him towards the stadium’s exit. Some individuals attempted to physically assault the MP, while another threw a plastic container at him.
The confrontation escalated into the stadium’s parking area, where numerous supporters surrounded the lawmaker, demanding his departure.
While the precise motive for Salasya’s expulsion remains unclear, some attendees were heard chanting “Respect the President,” suggesting the incident stemmed from perceived disrespect towards President William Ruto.
Following the incident, Salasya took to his X account, asserting that he maintains the support of Kenyans. “Kenyans are waking up soon and if you dare do anything to me, it will cause a big problem in this country. I will give a statement tomorrow morning,” he posted.
