Mt Kenya MPs Hold Night Meeting to Plot Gachagua Ouster
In a dramatic turn of events, a late-night meeting held at the Nairobi residence of a Cabinet Secretary nominee has signaled looming trouble for Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
The Saturday night gathering, attended by 21 MPs from the Mt Kenya region, was convened to discuss an impeachment motion against Gachagua.
According to sources who spoke to The Standard, the MPs accused Gachagua of gross violation of the Constitution and gross misconduct.
The meeting’s host, a nominee from Mt Kenya, reportedly emphasized the need for decisive action against the Deputy President, whom they accuse of insubordination towards President William Ruto.
The attendees expressed their frustration with Gachagua’s divisive tribal rhetoric and his insistence on a “shareholding” narrative that undermines the presidency.
The CS nominee conveyed the President’s growing discontent, stating, “The President is fed up with his deputy for being irresponsible and holding him hostage.”
One of the major grievances discussed was Gachagua’s alleged blackmail tactics and his persistent demands for appointments favoring his community. “Some of the examples cited in the meeting included his insistence that former Kenya Revenue Authority Commissioner General Githii Mburu’s position had to be retained by someone from the Mt Kenya region, a move that, the CS nominee told us, made Gachagua look parochial and tribal,” an MP revealed.
This insistence, according to the MPs, painted Gachagua as a divisive figure, prioritizing regional interests over national unity.
The MPs were also informed that the President had grown increasingly frustrated with Gachagua’s conduct, particularly his efforts to secure an unreasonable share of government appointments for the Mt Kenya region. The impeachment motion, they believe, would gain traction once the Cabinet is fully constituted.
Another MP in attendance highlighted the strategic timing of the meeting, which aimed to prepare the MPs psychologically for the impending political showdown.
The MP stated, “The meeting was meant to prepare us psychologically, and we were informed that since ODM had come on board, it would be easy and possible to have the numbers.”
With the support of ODM and other political allies, the MPs are confident they can muster the necessary votes to initiate the impeachment process. The coming weeks are expected to be crucial as the political landscape in Kenya braces for potential upheaval.
