MPs Probe Auditor General Over Fake Papers and Office Torture Claims
The National Assembly Committee on Cohesion and Equal Opportunities has initiated a probe into allegations of corruption, abuse of office, and mismanagement in the Office of the Auditor General, Nancy Gathungu.
The investigation comes after a petition from staff members accusing the leadership of creating a hostile work environment.
During a session on Tuesday, November 19, chaired by Kasipul MP Charles Were, lawmakers discussed the petition, which cited issues of tribalism, favoritism, and mental torture within Gathungu’s office.
Staff members, who spoke under anonymity, claimed these conditions hampered their ability to deliver on their mandate effectively.
“Over 200 staff members allegedly possess fake qualifications, including Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certificates, and no action has been taken against them,” stated one employee.
The claims also highlighted an environment rife with inequities, including favoritism in training opportunities.
The lawmakers emphasized the gravity of the accusations, with Were confirming that the petition would be forwarded to the Public Petitions Committee for detailed scrutiny. “The allegations presented are weighty and require immediate action. However, it’s crucial that the complainants identify themselves as investigations cannot proceed on anonymous claims,” he added.
Nyeri Town MP Duncan Mathenge stressed that the National Assembly’s laws mandate petitioners to provide their names and signatures to substantiate complaints. “The law is very clear. Petitions or complaints delivered to the National Assembly must contain details of the authors such as names and signatures among others,” he asserted.
Meanwhile, Kamukunji MP Yusuf Hassan cautioned against premature conclusions. “The Committee needs to be careful while handling the matter. We should be objective and professional to avoid taking a direction that might amount to undermining the office,” he remarked, suggesting that the grievances could be linked to leadership changes.
As the committee delves deeper, the spotlight remains on the authenticity of the allegations and whether they signify systemic issues or internal power struggles.
