MP Peter Salasya Calls Out President Ruto Over Unauthorized Grammy Bid Payment
Mumias East MP Peter Salasya has strongly criticized President William Ruto for allocating KSh 500 million to support Kenya’s bid to host the prestigious Grammy Awards.
Speaking on Tuesday, December 10, Salasya raised concerns over the allocation, especially after learning that Dennis Itumbi, a close ally of the president and head of the Creative Economy and Special Projects, was unaware that the president had already approved payment for the Grammy bid.
Salasya questioned the decision, highlighting that such financial allocations should first be approved by Parliament. “What is the purpose of Parliament? Where was this budget? “
“What is the threshold to commit Kenyans’ money?” he asked, stressing that the Parliamentary committee should have reviewed and discussed the budget before any funds were released for the Grammy bid.
The MP further criticized the expenditure, suggesting the KSh 500 million could have been better spent on ongoing government projects. He pointed out that the funds could be used to complete stalled infrastructure projects such as the Bukhungu Stadium, which needs about KSh 100 million to host AFCON, or to repair the Kakamega airstrip, which remains closed due to lack of maintenance.
Salasya also questioned the handling of government funds, claiming that there was mischief involved in the Grammy bid’s financial allocation.
“This is an episode. Government money is the money belonging to the president. It is money belonging to the public,” Salasya emphasized, calling for transparency.
He also noted that medical interns had not been paid, with some even protesting on the streets, which he described as a failure of the government to prioritize critical needs.
