Mp Amisi Accuses Protestors of Being Mercenaries Sent to Silence Orengo on ODM
Saboti MP Caleb Amisi has hit out at protestors who recently took to the streets to criticize Siaya Governor James Orengo, claiming they were paid to malign the veteran politician’s reputation.
Amisi, in a fiery statement released on Sunday, April 20, 2025, described the demonstrators as ungrateful and accused them of undermining a leader who has made immense contributions to Kenya’s democratic journey.
“Small kids paid to demonstrate against @orengo_james, who fought for a new constitution, who has been fighting Baba stolen elections in courts, representing ODM supporters caught in line of duty, imprisoned for agitation for multipartism… just because he says government is rogue; is not insanity nor absurdity, ni mavi tu kwa kichwa. Kenya needs a renaissance,” he said.

His remarks came shortly after a section of Bondo residents in Siaya County staged protests over Orengo’s outspoken criticism of the political partnership between President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga.

Orengo Pushes Back Against Political Complacency
Governor Orengo has recently stirred political waters by warning against the culture of praise-singing within ODM and urging the party to focus on its long-term ambitions, especially the 2027 presidential race.
Speaking during a public address in Siaya on Friday, Orengo emphasized that ODM must be a party of progress, not comfort.
“As a party, we cannot be in a position where we are satisfied with the status quo… If we want to move ahead, we must be ready to challenge it,” he declared.
Orengo further stressed the need for leaders to uphold the Constitution and not blindly support government policies for political convenience.
“We can say many things but for me, I cannot be a praise singer. If we keep on singing praises every time, we will not have a country,” he warned.

Rift Widens Over Raila-Ruto Collaboration
Orengo’s stance has not sat well with certain Luo professionals and political figures who believe his criticism threatens the fragile unity forged between Ruto and Raila in recent months.
The Ramogi Professional Caucus (RPC), a lobby group representing Luo professionals, accused Orengo of jeopardizing the region’s development by opposing the newfound cooperation between the two leaders.
“We want to tell Siaya Governor James Orengo that we are not happy with his remarks… We are united and fully support the broad-based government. This is the only way to ensure economic growth,” said Joshua Nyamori, the group’s chairman.
His sentiments were echoed by RPC member Polycarp Ochilo, who warned of possible political consequences for Orengo if he continues on his current path.
“If he continues like this, we will even impeach him,” Ochilo warned.
Political Crossroads for ODM
As 2027 looms on the political horizon, the debate surrounding the party’s direction is intensifying. Orengo’s call for a more confrontational and independent ODM clashes with efforts to foster unity through government cooperation.
Amisi’s strong defense of Orengo signals a growing faction within ODM that remains wary of too much closeness with the current administration. For now, Orengo stands firm, calling for truth, integrity, and a revival of the ideals that built the opposition’s foundation.
Whether his bold stand will cost him politically remains to be seen. But one thing is clear — the James Orengo protests have sparked a larger conversation about loyalty, progress, and the future of opposition politics in Kenya.
