Moses Kuria Fires Back at Rigathi Gachagua Over Kalonzo Debt Claims
In a recent exchange that has stirred the political landscape, senior State House economic advisor Moses Kuria subtly criticized former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua for his remarks about the Mt. Kenya region owing a political debt to Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka.
The contentious remarks were made during the funeral of Agnes Mwikali Muiya in Kalawa Ward, Mbooni Constituency, Makueni County.
Gachagua had stated that the Mt. Kenya region is indebted to Kalonzo for his support of former president Mwai Kibaki, particularly for stepping up as Kibaki’s deputy during a crucial period.
He also expressed gratitude to Kalonzo for his opposition to Gachagua’s impeachment during a politically tumultuous time.
“We are very grateful people, and we will never forget how the people from the Wiper Party led by Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka helped us. We still remember in 2007, your leader, Kalonzo, helped Mwai Kibaki when he had problems forming his Cabinet after becoming president. His tenure as the deputy president saw Kenya grow economically at levels never experienced before,” Gachagua remarked.
He hinted that the region would support Kalonzo in his 2027 presidential bid as a means of repaying this debt.
Moses Kuria responded on social media, questioning Gachagua’s assertion and implying skepticism about the notion of regional political debts. “Who else does Mt. Kenya owe after Kalonzo? Asking for our Receiver Manager,” Kuria posted on X (formerly Twitter).
This exchange has sparked a heated debate among Kenyans online, with opinions divided.
Some criticized Kuria’s remarks, while others backed Gachagua, arguing that Kalonzo indeed deserves recognition and possibly support for his past contributions.
