Massive Fire in Kariobangi Leaves 10 Injured and Several Buildings Destroyed
On Sunday, February 23, 2025, a devastating fire broke out around 1 pm in the Kariobangi Light Industries area of Nairobi.
The fire caused severe damage, affecting several buildings, including three bakeries, two timber yards, car garages, two schools, a carton yard, a firewood yard, an LPG gas cylinder yard, and residential homes.
The fire spread rapidly, leaving behind destruction, but the exact value of the lost property remains unknown.
At least 10 people were injured, including some locals who tried to prevent the fire from spreading. Firefighters from both Nairobi City County and Kiambu County responded quickly, battling the flames, which continued to reignite for nearly six hours before being fully contained.
On Monday, police revisited the area to begin their investigation into the cause of the fire.
The fire is believed to have originated from one of the affected buildings before quickly spreading to others. The situation was made worse by the wind, large amounts of cardboard, and the timber yard, which fueled the flames.
The fire left a significant impact on the local community. Several students arrived at school on Monday morning only to discover that parts of their school buildings had been destroyed. The destruction of classrooms displaced numerous students, and authorities are working to determine the full extent of the damage.
Police commander George Sedah confirmed that investigations are ongoing, stating, “We have injuries sustained as the locals fought to contain the spread of the fire. Many people are displaced following the fire.”
The Kenya Red Cross and St. John Ambulance teams assisted the victims, providing medical care at the scene.
In a separate incident, a fire broke out on the night of Friday, February 20, 2025, in Kanguruwe, Kayole. One man lost his life in the blaze, which started while he was asleep inside one of the affected houses.
After the Nairobi County Fire Brigade extinguished the fire, they discovered the victim’s body in the remains of the structure. The cause of this fire is still under investigation, and the man’s body has been moved to the mortuary for an autopsy.
