Makadara MP Claims Sifuna is Secretly Working With Gachagua for 2027 Bid
Makadara MP George Aladwa has issued a stern warning to ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna over his opposition to certain party members.
Aladwa is part of the ODM faction that openly supports President William Ruto and is committed to backing his re-election in 2027.
Why Sifuna Has Clashed With Some ODM Members
On the other hand, Sifuna is aligned with the more radical side of ODM that continues to criticize Ruto’s leadership. He has publicly declared that he will not vote for Ruto, even if ODM leader Raila Odinga endorses him.
According to Aladwa, Sifuna’s stance is influenced by his alleged ties to Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. The MP claimed that Sifuna is preparing to leave ODM and join forces with Gachagua, with hopes of securing the Nairobi gubernatorial ticket in 2027.
“I want to warn Sifuna. We have had many secretary generals before, and he is not the first one. He will leave just like Ababu Namwamba did. He should stop attacking me because he has insulted me enough. His days in ODM are numbered. We know he is working with Rigathi Gachagua, and we are aware he plans to be fronted for the Nairobi governor’s seat in 2027. We wish him well because we have already moved on,” Aladwa stated.
Rift Within ODM Over Government Support
Despite pressure from some members, Sifuna has remained firm in his refusal to support Ruto’s administration.
Following the inclusion of key ODM members in the Cabinet, some party loyalists argue that the party is now part of the government and should cooperate with it. President Ruto appointed former ODM national chairman John Mbadi as National Treasury Cabinet Secretary. Additionally, the party’s deputy leaders, Hassan Joho and Wycliffe Oparanya, were named Cabinet Secretaries for Mining and Cooperatives, respectively.
Other appointments include former Ugunja MP Opiyo Wandayi, who was assigned to the Energy Ministry, and Beatrice Askul, a former official in ODM’s national elections committee, who became the Cabinet Secretary for East African Community Affairs and Regional Development.
Several ODM lawmakers who won their seats under the party’s ticket have pledged to support government bills in Parliament, citing the goodwill Ruto has shown by including ODM members in his Cabinet.
However, Sifuna’s hardline stance against Ruto’s administration has frustrated pro-government ODM members, who are now pushing for his removal as secretary general.
Despite the mounting pressure, Sifuna has the backing of ODM’s acting leader, Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o, who recently reaffirmed that the Nairobi senator officially represents the party.
