Major Traffic Disruptions in Nairobi as KeNHA Closes 12 Roads for Marathon Event
The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced the closure of 12 major roads within Nairobi this weekend to facilitate the 2024 Nairobi City Marathon. The roads, critical to the capital’s traffic flow, will be temporarily closed starting Saturday, September 7, at midnight and are expected to reopen on Sunday, September 8, at 2 pm.
In a statement released on Saturday, KeNHA outlined the specific roads that will be affected. These include the Nairobi Southern Bypass at the exit of the Expressway, the Nairobi Expressway from James Gichuru Road to the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), and Waiyaki Way between James Gichuru Road and the entrance to the Expressway.
Other roads scheduled for closure include Mombasa Road, Lang’ata Road, Harry Thuku Road, University Way, Koinange Street, Tata Road, Wakiihuri Road, and Bunyala Road.
KeNHA emphasized that the closures are essential to ensure the smooth conduct of the marathon, urging motorists to comply with the new traffic arrangements. “This is to facilitate the 2024 Nairobi City Marathon. Motorists are advised to follow the traffic signs and guidance as directed by the Police and Traffic Marshals,” KeNHA stated in their advisory.
Motorists using these routes are advised to plan their journeys accordingly and utilize alternative roads to avoid inconvenience. For those intending to use the University Way, KeNHA has recommended rerouting via Kenyatta and Moi Avenues or Murang’a Road.
Vehicle owners planning to traverse Uhuru Highway, Koinange Street, and Harry Thuku Road should consider using the Nairobi Ring-Road Networks through Westlands, Ngara, and the Ring Road to Eastlands.
This latest directive follows a series of traffic disruptions announced by KeNHA in recent weeks. Just a week ago, the Authority informed the public of a temporary traffic disruption at the Haile Selassie roundabout on Uhuru Highway A8 Road, set to last from Saturday, August 31, until Tuesday, October 15. The disruption is to facilitate the construction of a pedestrian underpass at the section, with police and traffic marshals deployed to manage the traffic flow during the construction period.
Motorists are urged to remain patient and cooperate with the authorities during this period, ensuring safety and minimizing traffic disruptions as the marathon and construction activities proceed.
