Maanzo Slams Raila’s AUC Bid: ‘Campaign Feels Like a Joke; Ruto to Be Blamed’
Makueni Senator Dan Maanzo has sharply criticized the campaign of Azimio leader Raila Odinga for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairperson position, labeling it a “big joke” and suggesting that if Odinga fails, President William Ruto will be held accountable.
In a candid address at a church event, Senator Maanzo expressed his support for Raila Odinga’s ambition but raised serious concerns about the campaign’s execution. He argued that the campaign has been poorly managed and lacks the critical backing required to secure the prestigious AUC role.
Maanzo pointed out that during Odinga’s campaign launch at the State House, there was a noticeable absence of key diplomatic figures.
He emphasized that a campaign for such a significant position should have attracted substantial international support, including the presence of numerous presidents, Arab diplomats, and French-speaking representatives.
“We all wish Raila well at the African Union. However, the way this campaign is being run is like a game,” Maanzo stated. “If Raila were receiving a proper campaign, we would have seen presidents here on the launch day, at least 30; we would see Arabs here, we would see French-speaking people. In diplomatic language, if a minister is being used, it means the president is telling you that you have failed.”

The senator also expressed concerns about the lack of serious commitment from President Ruto and his allies, implying that they have not invested enough effort into supporting Raila Odinga’s bid. Maanzo warned that if Odinga’s campaign does not succeed, President Ruto will face blame for the failure.
“So, we wish Raila well, but woe unto Ruto if Raila doesn’t make it to the African Union,” Maanzo added. “We will blame you, President Ruto, because you are campaigning like a joke. It’s as if you’re playing games with Raila Odinga.”
The senator’s remarks have intensified the debate over the effectiveness of Raila Odinga’s AUC campaign and raised questions about the level of support from Kenyan political leaders.
