“Leaders Behaving Badly”: MCA hit by egg during assembly chaos.
Chaos erupted in the county assembly on Tuesday, November 26, as tempers flared over a controversial reshuffle in House leadership, bringing proceedings to an abrupt halt.
The turmoil peaked when Kiamaina MCA Paul Warigi was struck on the neck with an egg amid the heated altercation.
The fracas unfolded shortly after Speaker Joel Karuri announced the appointment of Keringet Ward MCA William Mutai as the new Majority Leader, a decision that divided the assembly. Dissenting members expressed their disapproval vocally, and what started as verbal exchanges soon escalated into a full-blown brawl.
In the thick of the chaos, Warigi found himself a direct target of the unrest. Recalling the moment, he said, “As the Speaker was making the announcement, an MCA struck me with an egg on the head. I was in front. You can see the impact. We, as reputable leaders, should not reach this point.”
Several MCAs stormed out of the session in protest, while others called for calm. Speaker Karuri, unable to restore order, was forced to suspend the mid-morning session temporarily.
Another MCA, who spoke anonymously, attributed the escalating tensions to external meddling by party officials. “This has been a political battle. We have been working together as a team, but recently it became evident that the struggle originates from party headquarters flexing their muscles,” the MCA revealed.
The dramatic events highlight the growing friction within the assembly, where political allegiances and external influence appear to be fueling division.
Despite the disruption, Warigi urged his colleagues to uphold decorum and set a better example for their constituents. “We cannot afford to let our disagreements degenerate into such shameful acts,” he added.
The assembly’s leadership reshuffle remains a contentious issue, with both sides standing their ground as the dust from Tuesday’s altercation settles.
