KRA Extends Tax Filing Deadline
Great news for thousands of Kenyans who were worried about missing the tax filing deadline! The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has just announced a 24-hour extension.
Originally set to close at midnight on Monday, June 30, the deadline has now been pushed to midnight on Tuesday, July 1.
The KRA explained that this extension is meant to give more people a chance to file their returns, especially after some technical hiccups with the iTax system on the final day of filing.
”We have opened the service lane! 24-hour extension up to tomorrow, July 1, 2025, midnight to file and pay your returns!” the taxman shared in a statement.
If you’re in Kenya and need help, the KRA contact centre is here for you! They’re open from 7am to 8pm on Tuesday, so you can get the assistance you need.
Plus, tax offices at service centres all over the country will be extending their hours to 12 hours, from 8am to 8pm. This is to make sure everyone can file their taxes on time and get the support they need.
The KRA wants to remind everyone that filing your annual tax returns is a legal requirement for all eligible taxpayers, not just those with a salary. This includes business owners, landlords, farmers, and even people who didn’t earn any income this year—they still need to file a NIL return.

It’s important to note that you still need to file your taxes even if your employer is already taking care of your Pay As You Earn (PAYE) deductions.
For those who are self-employed, earn rental income, or are involved in farming, it’s essential to declare all sources of income as required by law.
If you miss the filing deadline, you could face penalties. The KRA imposes a fine of five percent of the tax owed or Ksh2,000—whichever amount is greater—for late submissions.
Additionally, if any tax remains unpaid after the deadline, you’ll incur another penalty of five percent on the unpaid amount, plus a one percent monthly interest until it’s fully paid off.
Earlier in May, the tax authority took steps to ease the burden on taxpayers by extending its working hours. On Tuesday, May 20, the KRA announced that all its service centers and Huduma Centres would be open longer to help accommodate the influx of Kenyans filing their 2024 income tax returns.
This initiative was part of a larger effort by the authority to ensure compliance ahead of the June 30 deadline, focusing on all Kenyans with active KRA PINs. The goal was to minimize last-minute rushes and the technical issues that often arise as the deadline draws near.
