Kizza Besigye Breaks Silence After Mysterious Nairobi Arrest
Ugandan opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye has spoken for the first time since his arrest in Nairobi, shedding light on his plight and the events leading to his detention.
Addressing the media on Wednesday, November 20, from an undisclosed location in Uganda, Besigye disclosed that he has been completely isolated since the arrest.
“I have not been in contact with any person since I was arrested in Nairobi, so I could not have any brief with any lawyers. I will be having my own lawyers, but I haven’t briefed them,” Besigye stated.
The arrest has raised questions about the coordination between Ugandan and Kenyan authorities, with speculation of political motivations behind the incident. Martha Karua, NARC-Kenya party leader and a prominent advocate for democracy, provided a detailed account of Besigye’s movements before his disappearance.
According to Karua, Besigye arrived in Nairobi on Saturday, November 16, and checked into the Waridi Paradise Hotel and Suites. On the same day, he left the hotel with a taxi driver to attend a meeting at 108 Riverside Apartments.
“The driver waited for him in the basement parking from about 4:30 p.m. to late evening until around 4:00 a.m. on Sunday when he gave up and left, having received no response to his several messages,” Karua revealed.
Besigye’s failure to appear at Karua’s book launch the following day heightened concerns. Karua expressed fears that Besigye may have been abducted, alleging possible involvement by Ugandan authorities with facilitation from Kenyan officials.
On Wednesday morning, Besigye’s wife, Winnie Byanyima, made a heartfelt plea for his release. “I request the government of Uganda to release my husband, Dr. Kizza Besigye, from where he is being held immediately. He was kidnapped last Saturday while he was in Nairobi for Martha Karua’s book launch,” she urged.
The circumstances surrounding Besigye’s arrest continue to spark outrage and demand answers. Both local and international human rights groups have called for transparency regarding his detention and safe return.
