Kitui MCA Jeremiah Mutua Arrested Over Over Facebook Post Alleging Ethnic Contempt
In a decisive move against ethnic divisiveness, the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) arrested Kitui County Assembly Member (MCA) Jeremiah Mutua on the morning of September 8, 2024.
Mutua, who represents Nguni Ward and serves as the Deputy Minority Leader of the Kitui County Assembly, was detained on charges of ethnic contempt stemming from a series of Facebook posts that allegedly incited division.
The NCIC’s swift action comes in response to growing concerns over the role of social media in spreading hate speech and fostering ethnic discord.
According to reports, Mutua posted on his Facebook account, issuing a stark ultimatum to camel herders in his ward. “I have given 24 hours notice to camel herders grazing in Sosoma-Mwanzele & Ukasi villages to move out of the Kamba grazing land,” the post read. This inflammatory statement, which was first shared on August 27, quickly sparked outrage and drew the attention of the NCIC.
Following his arrest, Mutua was taken to the NCIC offices, where he recorded a statement. The Commission later confirmed that the MCA had been released pending further investigations. “The MCA has since recorded and released the statement as further investigations are undertaken,” the NCIC said in a statement.
The NCIC emphasized the seriousness of the situation, particularly given Mutua’s leadership position. “The Commission calls on the affected communities, especially politicians, to exercise tolerance as the rule of law takes its course,” the NCIC added. The Commission reiterated its commitment to holding leaders accountable for their words and actions, particularly when they have the potential to incite ethnic tensions.
This incident underscores the NCIC’s resolve to enforce laws aimed at promoting national unity and preventing ethnic conflicts. The Commission’s actions serve as a warning to other leaders who might be tempted to use their platforms to sow division.
As the investigation unfolds, the NCIC has assured the public of its dedication to ensuring a thorough and fair process.
The Commission has been vocal in urging politicians to exercise political tolerance and to act responsibly in their public and online statements.
