Kioni Reveals Why Jubilee Party Handpicked Matiang’i for Presidency
Jubilee Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni has confirmed the party’s backing of former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i for the 2027 presidential election.
This endorsement follows Matiang’i’s direct approach to the party, expressing his intent to seek the presidency on the Jubilee ticket.
Kioni revealed during a TV47 interview that Matiang’i was the sole individual to formally express this interest.
As a result, the party granted him automatic approval. Matiang’i is expected to soon publicly announce his candidacy and address key questions surrounding his political move. “Matiang’i is the one who reached out, and he will be discussing it in the coming days. We won’t have to wait long; he will do it when he’s ready,” Kioni stated.
“Anybody can express a desire to run for president; Matiang’i simply expressed his. One of the things he told me is that politics shouldn’t be a lifelong pursuit,” Kioni added.
Despite Matiang’i’s current endorsement, Kioni emphasized that the Jubilee party remains open to other potential presidential candidates.
He assured Kenyans that the opportunity to vie for the presidency on the Jubilee ticket is still available. Any individual with similar aspirations is encouraged to contact the party leadership.
“If you wish to run, we have 7 million people. Anyone who wants to express their desire is welcome. It is the party’s responsibility to promote the candidate, whoever it may be,” the Jubilee party Secretary-General noted.
“If we find other individuals interested in running, we will consider them as well. I’ve been trying to persuade others to take on this role,” he added.
During the interview, Kioni also criticized National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, accusing him of disregarding court orders. He specifically pointed to Wetang’ula’s alleged failure to decide whether to resign from his current position or step down as Ford Kenya party leader.
“Speaker Wetang’ula will be remembered as a speaker who disrespects court orders. There will come a time when these actions will haunt him personally, and he won’t be able to hide behind his office,” Kioni claimed.
