Kenyan Officer Dies After Being Shot in Haiti Security Operation
A Kenyan police officer deployed to Haiti as part of a peacekeeping mission was fatally shot during an operation against violent gangs.
Officer Shot During a Security Operation
Godfrey Otunge, the commander of the Kenyan forces in Haiti, confirmed that the tragic incident occurred in the western Artibonite region. The Kenyan officers were conducting an operation to neutralize criminal gangs when the officer was shot.
Following the attack, the injured officer was swiftly airlifted to Aspen Level 2 Hospital for medical attention. However, despite efforts to save his life, he succumbed to his injuries.
“Today, Sunday, February 23rd, 2025, one of our MSS officers from the Kenyan contingent was injured during an operation in SÉGUR – SAVIEN, in the Artibonite department. The officer was immediately airlifted to Aspen Level 2 Hospital but, unfortunately, succumbed to the injuries,” Otunge stated.
Challenges Facing the Mission
The Kenyan-led Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS), operating under the United Nations, has been stationed in Haiti since 2023 to combat the escalating gang violence. However, the mission has encountered several obstacles, including financial struggles.
One significant setback has been the freezing of financial contributions by former U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration. Earlier this year, the UN Secretary-General emphasized that additional funding was crucial for the mission’s success.
