Kenyan Athlete Willy Chelewa Dies Mysteriously After Meal at Elgeyo Marakwet Hotel
Tragedy struck the athletics community as promising Kenyan junior athlete Willy Chelewa, 28, collapsed and died in a hotel in the Kaptagat area of Elgeyo Marakwet County. The shocking incident has left friends, fellow athletes, and the sports world in mourning.
County Police Commander Peter Mulinge confirmed the tragic event, saying, “Willy Chelewa, aged 28, collapsed and died after taking a meal at the hotel where he had been living while training.”
According to police, Chelewa had been residing at the hotel during his intense training regimen, with aspirations of making a significant mark in the international athletics scene.
Chelewa had recently competed in the Nairobi City Marathon half marathon, finishing the race in 65 minutes, 30 seconds, securing the 67th position. His performance had caught the eye of international sponsors, and he had already signed with a Chinese sponsor, paving the way for his participation in global races.
Tragically, the athlete’s final meal consisted of black tea and rice, which he consumed just before collapsing. Police Commander Mulinge added, “The athlete had taken black tea and rice before he collapsed and died.”
Police immediately arrived at the scene to investigate the circumstances surrounding Chelewa’s sudden death. “Police are currently at the hotel investigating the incident and have collected samples of the meals he took before collapsing,” said Mulinge.
The hotel, a frequent base for athletes training in the high-altitude region known for its numerous training camps, was Chelewa’s home while he prepared for his next international races. The management promptly reported the matter to the authorities. “The hotel management reported the matter to the police, who rushed to the scene,” Mulinge confirmed.
The exact cause of death is yet to be established, as investigations continue. Samples of the athlete’s last meal are undergoing analysis to determine if they played a role in his untimely demise.
The sporting world now waits for answers as it grieves the loss of one of its bright stars.
