Kenya Officials Break Silence After Meeting Nduta in Vietnam, Share Her Status
Kenya’s government has provided a crucial update on Margaret Nduta, currently imprisoned in Vietnam, confirming she is in stable condition.
Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing’oei conveyed this news after a Kenyan team successfully visited Nduta at Hoi Chi Minh Prison.
Nduta, sentenced to death for drug trafficking, faced imminent execution. However, Sing’oei’s statement offered a glimpse of relief.
“Pleased to update that our team from Bangkok finally secured travel visas and made it to Hoi Chi Minh Prison in Vietnam, where Margaret Nduta is presently held,” Sing’oei stated.
“We can confirm that while deeply distressed, Margaret is coping and has been treated humanely,” he stated.
Despite the initial trial lacking legal representation, an appeal has been filed. Simultaneously, diplomatic channels between Kenya and Vietnam remain active, seeking alternative solutions. “We continue to engage our Vietnamese counterparts on other options towards resolving this difficult matter,” Sing’oei added.
Kenyan officials in Thailand are actively negotiating for a stay of execution, aiming to facilitate further discussions between the two nations.
This development follows a phone conversation between PS Sing’oei and Vietnam’s Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Nguyen Minh Hang, where assurances were given that Kenya’s plea was under consideration.
Nduta, 37, was convicted after being caught with over two kilograms of cocaine.
She claimed she was unaware of the drugs, believing she was delivering a suitcase for a man named John. Her case has sparked widespread concern in Kenya, prompting intensified government efforts for her release.
