Karua Accuses Odinga of Using Gen Z Protests for Political Gain
NARC-Kenya leader Martha Karua has criticized former Prime Minister Raila Odinga for what she describes as a betrayal, following his decision to align with President William Ruto’s administration.
During an interview on NTV, Karua, a former Azimio principal, accused Odinga of hijacking the Gen Z protests to advance his political agenda, rather than supporting the youthful protesters.
Karua highlighted that as opposition leaders, there is a duty to stand with the people, particularly those who have sacrificed for the country.
“When we become opposition leaders, we owe a certain duty to Kenyans, whether or not, we are in the Gen Z moments, the Gen Zs who did the work and died for this country,” Karua stated.
“As leaders, we must protect and stand with the people. So it’s not only the Gen Zs I also personally felt betrayed,” the NARC-Kenya party leader added.
She expressed her personal sense of betrayal, emphasizing the responsibility of leaders to protect and stand by the citizens.
Announcing her party’s exit from the Azimio coalition, Karua pointed out that some opposition leaders within the coalition had become spokespersons for Ruto’s government.
She specifically criticized Suna East MP Junet Mohamed and Mining CS Hassan Joho for siding with the government despite their previous opposition stance.
Karua stressed the need for the opposition to fully commit to defending the people and holding the Ruto regime accountable, which she argued cannot be done effectively with divided loyalties.
“That is why there is no way we can be in a coalition that no longer serves the purpose of the people. We need to defend the people, we need to call the Ruto regime to account and you cannot do that with one leg in and another one out,” Karua stated.
In addressing her fallout with Odinga, Karua suggested that Odinga formalize his alliance with President Ruto through a post-election coalition agreement, making their political partnership official.
“I call upon my friend and brother Raila Odinga to do the honourable thing, have a post-election coalition agreement with Ruto so that they are in government through a proper political marriage solemnised by the registrar of political parties,” Karua suggested.
Regarding the impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Karua revealed that despite her personal disagreements with Gachagua, his rights were violated.
She accused Gachagua of abusing his position in government but maintained that he, like all Kenyans, deserved a fair hearing during his impeachment process.
