Kalonzo Denies Responsibility for Delays in Appointing New Electoral Commissioners
On Sunday, Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka strongly denied the claims that he is responsible for the delay in the appointment of new commissioners for the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
The issue has caused a long wait for the country as the case involving Kalonzo’s ally, Ambassador Koki Muli, continues in court, with a hearing scheduled for January 2025.
In a firm statement, Kalonzo rejected the accusations, saying the delays were not caused by his actions but were a result of state interference. “On IEBC, we adhered to the strict timelines of the Court and we gave the name Koki Muli,” Kalonzo explained.
He further claimed that the government filed an appeal against the court’s decision, accusing them of attempting to appoint candidates who could be easily manipulated. “It is a Ruto strategy to ensure there is no IEBC,” Kalonzo added.
Kalonzo also accused National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula of being part of the plot to undermine Kenyans. “Speaker Wetangula is also part of the conspiracy against Kenyans. If they had taken time to organize Parliament properly, like they did with the impeachment of Rigathi Gachagua, the country would not be in a constitutional crisis,” he said.
The issue began in August when Augustus Kyalo Muli, leader of the National Liberal Party, was chosen by the Political Parties Liaison Committee to represent Azimio in the panel that will select the new IEBC commissioners. However, Azimio was not happy with this choice and pushed for Wiper’s Koki Muli to be included instead.
In the election, Kyalo won with 16 votes against Koki’s seven. Azimio disagreed with the result and contested it in court.
Augustus, who stood by his election, sued Azimio for trying to remove his name from the list. The case resulted in a court order that halted the process of appointing the selection panel until the matter is resolved.
