Kalonzo Defends Himself Against Viral IEBC Audio Leak by Itumbi
Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has addressed a leaked audio clip that sparked controversy after going viral online.
The audio, shared by Dennis Itumbi, State House’s Head of Presidential Special Projects and Creative Economy, captured Kalonzo blaming President William Ruto for delays in forming a new electoral commission. Itumbi criticized Kalonzo for his comments, escalating tensions between the two.
In the clip, Kalonzo is heard discussing the nomination of Augustus Kyalo Muli, leader of the National Liberal Party, as Azimio’s representative on the IEBC selection panel. Augustus was nominated by the Political Parties Liaison Committee, but Kalonzo reportedly opposed the choice, favoring Wiper’s Koki Muli instead.
During a press briefing at the SKM Command Centre in Nairobi, Kalonzo appeared to confirm the audio’s authenticity but dismissed its relevance. He accused his opponents of using the leak to advance their agenda.
“Maybe I should invite you [media] to hear my thoughts on the government’s delaying tactics,” Kalonzo remarked. “But if I do, don’t record and forward it to Itumbi.” He went on to describe the situation as “desperate.”
When asked about the details of the leaked conversation, Kalonzo clarified, “I said Muli is one of us, from my home county. I wish him well, but he should not be used as a proxy to stall critical national matters.”
The Wiper Party leader explained that Azimio had settled on Koki Muli and was given 48 hours to submit a name for the IEBC selection panel. He denied having any significant role in the delays in reconstituting the commission, despite a court case involving Ambassador Muli, a close ally.
In August, Augustus Kyalo Muli filed a lawsuit against Azimio la Umoja, challenging the coalition’s attempt to replace him on the IEBC selection list. The legal action led to conservatory orders that temporarily blocked the panel’s formation until the matter was resolved.
Kalonzo reiterated his commitment to resolving the IEBC stalemate, urging stakeholders to focus on pressing national issues rather than engaging in distractions.
