Kalonzo Criticizes Kindiki for Branding Gen Z Protesters as Criminals During Vetting
Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka took a firm stand against Interior Cabinet Secretary nominee Kithure Kindiki on Friday, criticizing him for his remarks on Gen Z protesters.
Speaking at a funeral in Machakos County, Kalonzo accused Kindiki of labeling the youthful demonstrators as criminals during his vetting session at the National Assembly.
Kalonzo expressed his discontent with Kindiki’s characterization of the Gen Z protesters, emphasizing that the young people were merely seeking accountability from the government. “The main reason the youths are complaining is that the same person who allowed their shooting during the protests was nominated to the cabinet,” Kalonzo stated.
He added, “He appeared before the vetting committee and called them criminals. He is calling our children criminals and that they invaded parliament.”
In his address, Kalonzo also pointed out the perceived bias in the vetting process, suggesting that despite the scrutiny, the nominees would likely be approved. “And despite using such a term he will still be approved to be a CS because he has a majority of MPs who will back him up,” he alleged.
Kalonzo’s criticism extended to the entire vetting process and the nominees’ qualifications, hinting at a lack of confidence in President Ruto’s selections. “Our take is that we do not have faith in Ruto’s nominees because some of them have controversial histories. We are happy that corruption within the government has been tamed, thanks to the Gen Zs.”
The Wiper leader also issued a warning to governors, suggesting that the youth were vigilant and would expose any misuse of public funds. “The youths will expose you to your expenditure,” Kalonzo warned.
Kalonzo’s remarks come just two days after Kindiki’s appearance before the National Assembly’s Committee on Appointments.
During his vetting, Kindiki defended the actions of the police during the protests, stating, “The police did their best and if any officers went beyond what is allowed in terms of use of force, it’s up to IPOA and other accountability organizations to help the country come to closure of the matter.”
Kalonzo’s outspoken criticism underscores the ongoing tension surrounding the appointment of new cabinet members and the accountability of government officials. As the vetting process continues, the scrutiny and debate over the nominees’ past actions and statements are expected to intensify.
