Junet Mohamed Proposes Scrapping Public Participation in Government Projects

National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohamed has called for the elimination of public participation in government projects across the country, claiming it hinders development initiatives.

Speaking in Taita Taveta town on Monday, December 2, the Suna East MP stated that the process of engaging the public causes unnecessary delays in implementing critical programmes.

Junet described public consultations during the drafting of bills as a “waste of time” that slows progress. He explained, “The gov’t should do away with public participation when it comes to passing bills… Tanzania is working with Adani, the same investors we rejected, to develop its airport. Are Tanzanians crazy?”

He further argued that governments are elected to deliver development, yet they encounter constant barriers when fulfilling their mandates. “The government is elected to bring development to the country… but when it tries to fulfil its duties, it faces obstacles,” he added, as reported by KBC.

Junet also criticised the current requirement to consult various stakeholders, such as community members, civil organisations, and religious groups, before launching projects or passing bills. He likened the situation to overly complex household approval processes.

“Hii mambo ya kuomba ruhusa kwa kila mtu lazima ikwishe. Serikali haiwezi kuomba ruhusa mahakama na kanisa ati ndio waweke stima (this issue of seeking permission from everyone must stop. The government cannot ask for permission from the courts and the church just to install electricity),” he said.
