JKIA Protest Takes a Personal Turn as Kasmuel McOure Clashes with Cleaning Lady Over Aldani Deal

In a dramatic turn of events at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), outspoken political activist Kasmuel McOure struggled to persuade a cleaning lady to join the protest against the proposed lease of the airport to India’s Adani Group.

The lease deal, which could potentially last for 30 years, has sparked widespread outrage among airport workers and citizens alike.

On Wednesday, September 11, a significant number of JKIA staff gathered to protest the proposed takeover by Adani Group. The workers voiced their concerns over job security, arguing that the deal would lead to significant layoffs and uncertainty about their future. The protest disrupted both international and local travel, with many flights delayed or canceled as a result.

Kasmuel McOure, who joined the protest, took to social media to broadcast the event. In a video posted online, McOure could be seen walking through the airport, passionately denouncing the Adani deal. “We are here to occupy the airport. Adani has to go; they cannot take over JKIA. If they thought they saw demonstrations, they have not seen anything,” McOure declared, his voice echoing his defiant stance against the proposed lease.

During his walk-through, McOure encountered a cleaning lady diligently going about her work. Seizing the opportunity, he approached her to discuss the implications of the deal. “Madam, you should not be working,” McOure suggested, hoping to convince her to join the protest.

We've occupied JKIA!!!
I stand in solidarity with the KAA workers. No flights have taken off or landed, and while citizens may be inconvenienced, they stand with us in support of this cause.
The message is clear:

The woman, however, responded with practical concerns: “Where will I get goro goro (maize flour)?” Her reply highlighted the stark reality faced by many workers who rely on their current jobs to make ends meet.

Despite McOure’s arguments that the Adani deal could jeopardize her employment, the woman remained resolute. “I have to work to eat,” she insisted, illustrating the tough choices faced by individuals in the face of political and economic upheaval.

The protest underscored the mounting tension over the Adani lease, with airport workers and activists rallying to prevent what they see as a threat to their livelihoods and national sovereignty.
