JKIA-Adani Deal Whistleblower Faces Death Threats After DCI Visit
Nelson Amenya, a former manager at a multinational company in Kenya and current whistleblower, is living in fear after exposing a controversial deal involving the Adani Group and the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).
Amenya, who is now pursuing a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in France, has revealed alarming details about the contract that could potentially cost Kenyan taxpayers and jeopardize the nation’s international reputation.
“I was warned by international journalists in France and other places that Adani would use various means to intimidate me, and I have to be careful. I’ve been attacked, trolled, and threatened by bloggers from India for defending my country,” Amenya told The Standard.
Amenya disclosed that the deal grants the Adani Group extensive control over JKIA, including the power to amend Kenyan laws, impose charges, and repatriate profits with minimal government oversight.
Additionally, the contract reportedly stipulates that Kenya would be responsible for losses and disruptions to Adani’s operations, potentially resulting in hefty compensation payments if the deal is terminated.
“There are many red flags in this deal, and Kenyans will lose a lot. The president (William Ruto) should listen to Kenyans,” Amenya said, warning of the severe consequences if the deal goes through as planned.
His exposé has sparked national attention, with politicians like Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka accusing the government of intimidating Amenya.
Onyonka claimed that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) is using the guise of investigating Amenya’s company to silence him. “I have reliable information that Afrinet Carbon Limited is linked to the whistleblower of this controversial deal. The DCI’s letter is part of a politically motivated witch hunt,” Onyonka stated.
Amenya’s whistleblowing efforts have shed light on potential risks for JKIA, including a clause that would allow Adani to secure loans using the airport’s title deed as collateral.
Amenya remains vigilant despite the threats to his safety, asserting that the Kenyan public deserves transparency on the deal. “I uncovered numerous red flags after accessing the Adani deal documents. I realised Kenyans are being misled,” he emphasized.
