Isaac Mutuma Set to Be Sworn in as Meru Governor After Court Confirms Mwangaza’s Impeachment
Meru County will soon have a new leader. The High Court has confirmed the Senate’s decision to remove Governor Kawira Mwangaza from office.
This means Deputy Governor Isaac Mutuma M’Ethingia is set to become the new governor.
On Friday, March 14, Justice Bahati Mwamuye delivered the court’s ruling. She stated that the challenge to Mwangaza’s removal did not meet the necessary legal standards to overturn the Senate’s decision.
The judge confirmed that Mwangaza received a fair hearing. She rejected her request to cancel the official notice of her removal.
Justice Mwamuye said, “The court has assessed the totality of the impeachment process and found that she was given ample opportunity to present her case and respond to allegations levelled against her.”
The government has announced that Mutuma M’Ethingia will be sworn in as the new Meru governor on Monday, March 17, 2025, at Mwendantu Grounds.
“…it is notified for information of the general public that the swearing-in ceremony of Isaac Mutuma M’Ethingia, as the Governor of Meru County, shall take place on Monday, 17th March 2025, at Mwendantu Grounds, starting at 8.30 a.m.,” read the official government announcement from March 14, 2025.
Mutuma was elected as Meru’s deputy governor in 2022, alongside Mwangaza. They ran and won without the backing of any political party.
They achieved a significant victory, defeating prominent politicians in Meru, including former Governor Kiraitu Murungi and his predecessor, Peter Munya.
Before entering politics, Mutuma held a senior position in the Kenya Prisons Service and served as a Reverend in the Methodist Churches of Kenya.
He has a Higher Diploma in Forensic Psychology and Criminology from the Kenya Institute of Studies in Criminal Justice. He also holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Theology from Kenya Methodist University.
Additionally, Mutuma has a Master’s Degree in Governance and Ethics from Mount Kenya University.
Mutuma has previously worked as a Child Rights Advocate with Plan International, a youth representative for Habitat for Humanity in the Mount Kenya Region, and as a Human Rights Officer and Inmate Rehabilitation Programme Implementer within the prison services.
