Irungu Nyakera Breaks Silence on How Waititu Was Moved to Kamiti Prison
Irungu Nyakera, Chairman of the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), has ignited controversy by revealing that more than six Land Cruisers were deployed to move former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu from Industrial Area Prison to Kamiti Maximum Prison on March 24.
Nyakera alleges that Waititu’s imprisonment is a political maneuver disguised as legal action.
He believes there’s a palpable fear surrounding Waititu’s potential political resurgence. “What he is going through is not justice; it is politics disguised as law. This is fear. Fear of his comeback,” he stated.
He drew parallels between Waititu’s situation and historical figures like Jomo Kenyatta, Raila Odinga, Koigi wa Wamwere, and Kenneth Matiba. These individuals, despite facing imprisonment, later returned to prominence. Nyakera asserts, “Jomo Kenyatta, Raila Odinga, Koigi wa Wamwere, Kenneth Matiba were jailed, mocked, written off but history had other plans. This is not Waititu’s end. It’s his awakening.”
Waititu was sentenced on February 13, 2025, to 12 years in prison or a fine of Ksh53.5 million. This verdict stemmed from his conviction for illegally awarding a tender during his tenure as Kiambu County governor.
The corruption charges related to a Ksh588 million road tender scandal. The court initially imposed a five-year jail term or a Ksh2.5 million fine, along with a mandatory Ksh51 million fine, defaulting to an additional seven years in prison.
On March 18, Waititu filed a new application seeking release on bond while serving his sentence.
Milimani Anti-Corruption Court Chief Magistrate Thomas Nzioki also fined Waititu’s wife, Susan Wangare, Ksh500,000 or a year in prison.
The magistrate condemned Waititu’s actions, citing a severe breach of public trust. “This case is a typical example of a breach of public trust by the former Governor and the co-accused. The offending acts of the accused persons were deliberate, inexcusable, and undermined the tenants of good governance,” Nzioki stated.
