Inside Collins Leitich’s Lavish Lifestyle: The Eldoret Man Who Founded His Own Police Station
Collins Leitich, a businessman from Eldoret, has caused a stir across the nation with his bold and unusual actions. He became widely known after it was discovered that he had built an unapproved police station in the Chebarus area of Eldoret, located in the Rift Valley.
Leitich, also known as “Chepkulei,” reportedly constructed this police patrol base without permission from the National Police Service (NPS). The site, painted in official police colors, included an office and holding cells, giving the appearance of a legitimate security installation.
This station operated without detection for six months, handling local disputes and cases involving unlicensed timber products. Residents, unaware of its unauthorized status, believed it was a genuine effort to improve local security. The discovery of this unapproved station surprised both local residents and authorities.
Officers from the Kamuyu Police Post uncovered the illegal station on March 8th, raising questions about how it could have functioned unnoticed for so long. Leitich, however, has defended his actions, claiming he had the support of high-ranking police officials.
He stated that his intention was to address the rising crime rates in the area, including burglaries, livestock theft, and muggings. He argued that the official police stations were too distant to respond quickly to emergencies, leaving the community vulnerable.
“I sought guidance from the regional commander and was told that if we provided a permanent building, the police service would deploy officers,” Leitich explained.
He also revealed that he had offered his personal vehicle to assist with police operations and planned to officially hand it over on the day the station was discovered.
Despite his justifications, the establishment of the unauthorized police station has raised legal and ethical concerns. Authorities have launched an investigation into the matter. Uasin Gishu County police commander Benjamin Mwanthi assured residents that appropriate action would be taken.
Mwanthi also stressed the importance of following proper procedures, which include approval by the county security committee, the Inspector General, and final authorization by the Interior Cabinet Secretary.
Those who know Leitich describe him as having a lavish lifestyle and an extravagant personality.
A look at his social media profiles reveals images of him on international trips and with expensive vehicles.
In a previous interview, he disclosed that he once spent KSh 1.2 million in a single day to hire a private jet for a business trip to Rwanda. “On several occasions, while travelling by road, I have a fleet of cars, and it is not bragging. My love for finer things is undeniable,” he said. Chepkulei earned his wealth as a consultant who helps foreign investors from Rwanda and Zimbabwe invest in Kenya.
Another instance of Leitich’s extravagant displays was in 2024 when he married his partner, Stella, in a luxurious ceremony held in Karen, Nairobi.
The father of two told the media that spending money brings him joy, but he believes it is not the ultimate goal.
Before his fame and wealth, Leitich worked in a supermarket in Nakuru before moving to Nairobi, where his business ventures thrived. The third born in a family of six, he grew up in a humble household, raised by a single mother who struggled financially.
At one point, he nearly dropped out of school due to a lack of school fees.
