Indian National and Kenyan Nabbed in Ksh. 1.1M Fake Vehicle Import Scheme
Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Kilimani have apprehended two individuals suspected of swindling a Kenyan resident out of Ksh.1.1 million in a fraudulent vehicle importation scheme.
The investigators state that the deception began on May 27, 2022. Yunus Hamza Hussein, an Indian citizen, is accused of pretending to be a sales representative at Rana Motors, located along Ngong Road.
Hussein reportedly tricked the victim into paying Ksh.1.1 million as a down payment for two vehicles: a Toyota Probox Extra and a 14-seater Toyota Hiace 7L, which were valued at Ksh.2.9 million. Following the payment, Hussein vanished without delivering the promised vehicles.
“Yunus Hamza Hussein, acting as a skilled salesman at Rana Motors on Ngong Road, deceived an unsuspecting person by promising to deliver two vehicles, a Probox Extra and a 14-seater Toyota Hiace 7L for Sh2.9 million,” the DCI stated on X.
“Lured by this pretense, the victim made a substantial deposit of Ksh.1.1 million, only to see the con artist disappear.”
However, detectives managed to locate Hussein, who then guided them to his partner, Brian Omweri.
“Due to forensic intelligence, detectives tracked Hussein to his hiding place at Crystal Apartments in Athi River, where multiple SIM cards were confiscated,” the DCI reported.
“Hussein then directed detectives to his associate Brian Omweri in Makongeni, Thika, where they found a SIM card connected to a Ksh.550,000 payment from the victim.”
Both suspects are currently detained and will be brought before the court next week to face charges related to fraud.
