Indian Congress Hits Out at Modi After Kenya Scraps Ksh338B Adani Projects
In a major blow to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration, the Indian National Congress Party has sharply criticized his government following Kenyan President William Ruto’s decision to cancel two deals worth Ksh338 billion with the Adani Group.
The controversial deals involved the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) expansion and a key power transmission project.
Congressman Jairam Ramesh condemned Modi’s ties with the Adani Group, describing the fallout as a foreign policy disaster. “It was expected to happen, and it has today.
Kenya has cancelled the airport and power transmission deals of the Modani Group. The non-biological PM’s long-standing relationship with the Adani Group is globally well-known,” Ramesh stated.
He further criticized the Indian government for allowing a single conglomerate to dictate the nation’s foreign policy. “Our nation’s foreign policy cannot be subordinated to the interests of just one business conglomerate. Modani’s sweetheart deals just bring us disrepute. This is a foreign policy disaster that will cloud our soft power for years to come,” he added.
The criticism follows President Ruto’s announcement during a State of the Nation address in Parliament, where he cited corruption allegations as the basis for his directive to cancel the deals.
Ruto instructed Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir and Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi to “immediately cancel the ongoing procurement process” involving Adani’s companies.
“I now direct procuring agencies within the Ministry of Transport and the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum to immediately cancel the ongoing procurement process for the JKIA Expansion Public Private Partnership transaction, as well as the recently concluded KETRACO transmission line deals,” Ruto declared.
The now-terminated JKIA expansion project had drawn criticism in Kenya due to its potential cost burden and fears of job losses in the aviation sector. Adani’s proposal included a Ksh238 billion investment to modernize the airport but was met with protests from aviation workers.
Congress views the cancellation as a diplomatic embarrassment for India, exposing risks tied to Adani’s growing influence on Modi’s administration. “India’s global strategies must not be dictated by a single business entity such as Adani,” Ramesh reiterated.
