“I’m Back to Take Over!” – Matiang’i Declares War on Ruto as Gusii Youth Heckle Rivals in Explosive Funeral Drama
Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has called on the Gusii community to show respect for their elected leaders. He mentioned that he plans to engage with those aligned with the Kenya Kwanza government to garner support for his presidential campaign.
During his remarks on Friday, June 27, 2025, Matiang’i urged the Gusii community to come together and present a united front, encouraging other communities to rally behind him. He expressed his readiness to embark on this journey alongside all Kenyans.
Additionally, he appealed to the leaders to listen to the voices of the voters, emphasizing his commitment to running for the presidency as he seeks support from allies in other communities.
“This is the time we are supposed to be united as a community more than ever before. We might differ in views, but it does not mean we cannot agree,” Matiangi told mourners at Sengera Girls Secondary School ground in Bomachoge Chache constituency during the funeral of Mwalimu Jeremiah Okemwa.
Accompanied by Senator Richard Onyonka, Kisii County Deputy Governor Elijah Obebo, and lawmakers Innocent Obiri (Bobasi), Anthony Kibagendi (Kitutu Chache South), Obadiah Barongo (Bomachoge Borabu), Alpha Miruka (host), and Deputy Speaker Jacob Bagaka, Matiang’i said he will meet leaders from the Gusii community to chart a political course ahead of the 2027 general election.
Resigning from US job
At the same time, the former CS let the residents know that he had stepped down from his job in the US and was now ready to dedicate himself to his presidential campaign.
“When I came here in May, you told me to resign from my work in the US and return to vie for presidency. I am here and ready to roll my sleeves and ready to journey together till we reach” Matiang’i pointed out.
Matiang’i, who shared heartfelt condolences from former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Kalonzo Musyoka, Martha Karua, and Eugene Wamalwa, mentioned that he’s in talks with them to gain their support for his presidential aspirations.

During his second public appearance in Gusii, the former CS urged the leaders to refrain from criticizing Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos and other community members in government, emphasizing that such actions could hinder their efforts and tarnish their reputation.
Matiang’i expressed his intention to involve elders and church leaders to help guide local politicians, stating that the moment has come for the community to step up and produce the next president, aiming to rebuild the nation and promote development.
Condemns killings during protests
He expressed strong disapproval of the recent killings of Gen Z protesters, emphasizing that it’s unacceptable for the government to ignore the struggles of young people who are trying to improve their lives. He pointed out that the country is heading in the wrong direction and called on church leaders to pray for a change.
In a similar vein, Onyonka criticized President William Ruto’s administration for not tackling the issues that Kenyans are facing. He stressed that it’s crucial for Kenyans to choose a president who will genuinely address their concerns and work towards bettering their lives.
“Our country is in a bad state. The killing of Gen Z protesters is not auguring well for the country. We need leadership which is responsive to the needs of its citizens,” Onyonka said.
Obiri, who was elected through the Wiper Democratic Movement Party, expressed his support for the former CS’s presidential ambitions and encouraged Kenyans to unite behind him.
He also urged young people who haven’t yet obtained their identity cards to do so and register as voters, emphasizing the importance of casting their votes for Matiang’i to secure a victory.
“The only way for Matiang’i is for you to register as a voter and vote to make his ambition a reality,” Obiri told mourners, sentiments echoed by former Kisii Central Ward representative Kefa Mogaka.
Drama and heckling
At first, things got a bit heated when a group of young people started heckling Miruka after Kibagendi handed him the microphone to speak. This prompted Onyonka to step in and invite Matiang’i to address the mourners instead.
When Kibagendi took over from Matiang’i, the youths continued to shout, and even Obadiah couldn’t get a word in after the public address system failed. This led the MC to wrap up the ceremony early, which forced Miruka to leave in a bit of a huff.
