“Hii ni kelele”: Osoro Rubbishes Kenyans’ Concerns About Adani’s Deal on JKIA
South Mugirango MP Silvanus Osoro has firmly defended the government’s decision to partner with Adani Holdings in a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) to modernize Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), dismissing public criticism as unproductive noise.
Osoro’s remarks come amidst growing concerns over the deal’s implications for job security and the potential privatization of public assets.
In a candid statement, Osoro expressed frustration with the backlash, emphasizing that the modernization of JKIA is crucial for Kenya’s future. “You want & deserve a modern airport. You do not want to pay taxes. GOK does not want to add you a burden through further borrowing. PPP is legal. Get us another investor then to facelift the airport. We can’t be a noisy lot with no solutions,” Osoro declared.
The MP highlighted the government’s challenging position of balancing infrastructure development with minimizing the tax burden on citizens. He urged critics to propose alternative investors if they oppose the Adani deal, asserting that constructive solutions are necessary for progress.
“How many more youths will be employed in a facelifted international airport? How many more informal jobs will be created in the long run?? Eti, we live with our shame?! No. Eti just repair the leaking roof?! Hard decisions must be made as long as no public money is lost!” Osoro argued.
Addressing concerns about job losses and the involvement of a foreign entity, Osoro assured that airport employees’ job security would be a priority. “The only discussion we should have is on the current employees’ plight. They will retain their positions, and more will be recruited to cover the expanded sections. Their demand for a clear clause on their plight should be addressed. Hii ingine ni kelele. PPP is legal,” he noted.
As debate continues over the terms of the Adani deal, Osoro’s comments underscore a commitment to moving forward with modernization plans while addressing valid concerns about workforce stability.
