HELB Launches Loan Repayment via USSD for Non-Smartphone Users: Procedure
The Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) has rolled out a solution for borrowers without smartphones, making it easier for them to repay their loans.
In a digital age where many services require smartphone access, this move ensures that individuals with basic feature phones, commonly known as “Kabambe” in Kenya, are not left behind in fulfilling their financial obligations.
In an official announcement on its X (formerly Twitter) handle on Tuesday, September 3, HELB introduced a USSD code that allows borrowers to make payments directly from their mobile phones.
“No smartphone? You can conveniently repay your loan by dialling USSD code *642#,” the state corporation stated, providing a lifeline for those who might not have access to the internet or smart devices.

The introduction of this code underscores HELB’s commitment to inclusivity and accessibility. By offering this service, the board ensures that all borrowers, regardless of the type of phone they own, can stay on top of their loan repayments, thereby avoiding penalties and ensuring a good credit record.
How to Repay Your HELB Loan Using a USSD Code
HELB has outlined a straightforward process for borrowers to follow when using the USSD code. Here are the steps:
- Dial *642#: This is the first step for anyone looking to repay their HELB loan. Once you dial the code, you will be prompted to either log in or register if you are a first-time user.
- Log in or Register: If you already have an account with HELB, you can log in using your details. For first-time users, the registration process is simple and can be completed within minutes.
- Select Loan Repayment: After logging in or registering, choose the loan repayment option from the menu provided.
- Select M-Pesa: Once you’ve chosen to repay your loan, you will be asked to select your preferred payment method. HELB has integrated M-Pesa, Kenya’s most popular mobile money service, to facilitate this process.
- Enter the Amount: Specify the amount you wish to repay. It’s essential to ensure you have sufficient funds in your M-Pesa account before proceeding with this step.
- Enter M-Pesa Pin: To authorize the payment, enter your M-Pesa pin. This step secures the transaction, ensuring that only you can complete the payment.
- Confirmation: After the payment is processed, you will receive SMS notifications from both M-Pesa and e-Citizen, confirming that your loan repayment was successful.
Quickly and conveniently apply for your subsequent loan. Simply dial *642# and follow the prompts as shown. #LeavingNoStudentBehind pic.twitter.com/uFFFjVyI4T

This initiative by HELB is part of a broader strategy to enhance service delivery and ensure that all borrowers have the means to meet their obligations. By making loan repayment accessible through basic mobile phones, HELB is addressing the digital divide that often leaves those without smartphones at a disadvantage.
In a country where mobile penetration is high but smartphone ownership is still growing, this service is a game-changer. It aligns with HELB’s mission to support higher education through accessible financing options, ensuring that financial constraints do not hinder the pursuit of education and professional development.
