Havi, Ahmednasir Blast Dutch King Over Meeting with CJ Koome
City lawyers Nelson Havi and Ahmednasir Abdullahi have sharply criticized the Dutch King’s recent meeting with Chief Justice Martha Koome, labeling it a “gross violation of accountability.” Their concerns stem from ongoing issues within Kenya’s Judiciary.
The lawyers, in a letter to Dutch Ambassador Maarten Brouwer, expressed deep disappointment. They cited allegations of corruption and misconduct within the Judiciary under CJ Koome’s leadership. They believe the royal visit effectively endorsed an institution plagued by such problems.
“The visit was a stab in the back of the toiling Kenyans,” the letter stated, accusing the Dutch government of siding with a “thieving and corrupt Judiciary.”
During the meeting, CJ Koome highlighted judicial independence and protection from external influence. However, Havi and Abdullahi dismissed this, alleging the royals prioritized diplomatic niceties over addressing critical issues.
Nelson Havi has been vocal in calling for CJ Koome’s resignation, even filing a petition seeking the removal of all Supreme Court judges. He accused them of gross misconduct and misbehavior.
The lawyers urged Ambassador Brouwer to convey their strong protest to the Dutch government. They emphasized that the royal visit undermined efforts to establish a credible Judiciary.
They argued that the Dutch King could have engaged with civil society and other stakeholders fighting for justice instead of meeting with CJ Koome. They described her as a “figurehead of a compromised and discredited institution.”
The Dutch King’s three-day state visit to Kenya included meetings with President William Ruto and various stakeholders.
