Grief Strikes Sironga Girls’ High as Form Four Student Dies in Suspected Suicide
A Form Four student at Sironga Girls’ High School in Nyamira County tragically died by suicide on Saturday morning after reportedly jumping from the second floor of the school’s administration block.
The incident occurred as the student, who was set to sit her Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams next month, left behind a grieving school community struggling to comprehend the sudden loss.
The tragic event unfolded during the morning hours when students were preparing to begin their day. According to the school’s administration, the girl jumped from the building while her peers were still gearing up for the day ahead.
“The girls were preparing to start the day when the student jumped from the building. She was injured and rushed to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead,” said School Principal Jane Nyanumba.
Nyanumba expressed her shock at the incident, noting that the student had displayed no signs of distress or unusual behavior before her death. “She was okay and even slept well. We are shocked,” she said.
The deceased was described as a quiet student, and her friends and teachers could not identify any immediate triggers that might have led to this tragedy. The motive behind the student’s actions remains unclear, and authorities have launched an investigation into the incident. Nyamira South Deputy County Commissioner Florence Obunga confirmed that detectives had been on the scene for the better part of Saturday.
“I was informed of the incident by the school principal at 6:30 am. We went there with the sub-county security team and established that the student had sustained injuries to the head,” Obunga stated. She further revealed that the school has a robust counselling department and expressed concern over what could have prompted the student to take such drastic action.
Following the incident, the student’s parents were contacted and arrived at the institution to mourn their loss and seek answers. Investigating officers are now working to piece together the details of the incident in hopes of uncovering any potential underlying causes.
West Mugirango MP Steve Mogaka also commented on the tragic occurrence, urging authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and determine the reasons behind the student’s death. He emphasized the need for preventive measures to avoid similar incidents in the future.
“Mental health has become a leading killer disease, and through Parliament, I will ensure that I draft a motion for counselling lessons to be included in the curriculum to reduce the suicide cases among the youth,” Mogaka stated. He expressed deep concern over the growing rates of suicide, particularly among young people.
This incident is part of a troubling rise in suicide cases across Kenya. Police officials have reported that up to two cases of suicide are being recorded daily, signaling a worrying trend. Factors contributing to the rise in suicides, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), include academic pressures, financial difficulties, joblessness, bullying, mental health disorders, and substance abuse, among others.
As the school community mourns the loss of a young life, questions about the impact of mental health on students’ well-being are becoming more urgent. Experts are calling for more robust mental health support systems in schools and the need for early interventions to address signs of distress before they escalate into tragedy.
