Govt Strips Gachagua of Guards, Employs Bouncers After Embu Heckling
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has accused the government of targeting him politically after the withdrawal of his state-provided security detail.
This drastic measure follows recent incidents where Gachagua outshone President William Ruto during public events.
Mumbi disclosed that the friction began after an event two weeks ago in Embu County. During a Catholic church gathering, the crowd reportedly cheered louder for Gachagua than for the President, sparking speculation about his rising popularity.
The tension escalated last Friday during the burial of Mark Wainaina, a nominated MCA in Murang’a County. Mourners rejected speeches from both President Ruto and Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, further fueling claims of growing dissent. “These incidents seem to have irked certain powers, leading to measures aimed at silencing Mr. Gachagua,” Mumbi stated.
In a surprising turn, all government-provided security personnel assigned to Gachagua were withdrawn after he attended a service at Kangari AIPCA church in Murang’a. Mumbi confirmed, “As we speak, Gachagua has no single security officer provided by the government. We were informed that he must cease political activities to regain protection.”
Sources within the Interior Ministry allege that the move aims to prevent Gachagua from creating what they termed an “early campaign mood.” An anonymous official remarked, “Our seniors from high offices have directed us to limit his activities to allow the government to focus on development projects.”
Gachagua’s team has raised concerns over his safety, with Mumbi questioning the rationale behind the withdrawal. “What if some criminal grouping abducted Mr. Gachagua and forcibly extracted that information from him? It is standard practice to provide security for life for such government officials,” he argued.
The allegations highlight growing political tensions within Ruto’s administration, with observers speculating about internal divisions.
As Gachagua’s team pushes back, questions over the balance between security provisions and political maneuvering remain unanswered.
