Govt Revises ID Registration Rules After Lifting Application Fees
The head of the National Registration Bureau, Aggrey Masai, has revealed new rules for Kenyans applying for national IDs, following President William Ruto’s decision to remove application charges.
While speaking in Nakuru at the start of the refreshed registration process in Shabab, Masai stated that first-time applicants must now be accompanied by at least one parent before receiving an ID.
Also, local officials, ideally a Chief, will verify the parent-child connection before the application is approved.
“We have not stopped the verification process; we have implemented new steps to ensure proper checks,” Masai declared.
“An applicant must come with a parent, and the Chief must confirm their identity and relationship. After this, they will be eligible for the next part of the registration,” he explained.
According to the new rules, the National Registration Bureau and the government will hold Chiefs legally accountable if a non-Kenyan is given an ID.
Simultaneously, applicants will get their IDs within six days, since the process has been made digital.
“If we find that registered people are not Kenyans, we can easily hold people responsible. We will hold the Chief responsible, as they are the ones confirming the applicants’ identities,” the Director added.
“I want to assure applicants that with the new registration effort, they will receive their documents in six days.”
Masai stated that these extra steps will help the government confirm the identity of Kenyans, especially in border areas.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen is expected to officially launch the ID registration drive in Nakuru, which will then expand to all 290 constituencies in Kenya.
The government aims to register at least 70,000 Kenyans within 90 days.
