Govt Issues Update on 100 Tenants & 8 Mjengo Workers of Collapsed Kahawa West Building

In a significant development following the collapse of an eight-story building in Kahawa West on Sunday, October 20, the Nairobi County Government has confirmed that all individuals who were feared trapped have been accounted for.

A lady and a child, who had been stuck inside the rubble, were safely evacuated and transported to safety.

The building, a mixed-use development, collapsed suddenly, but thankfully, the swift actions of emergency services allowed for the timely evacuation of approximately 100 occupants before disaster struck.

Nairobi County Deputy Governor Njoroge Muchiri visited the scene to assess the situation firsthand. “All the workers who were working on the ground floor of the eight-story collapsed building have all been accounted for,” he reported, providing reassurance to the community.

However, the incident did result in two reported casualties. A middle-aged lady sustained injuries from falling debris while standing outside the building, and another gentleman was rescued with a broken leg. Both individuals were promptly taken to the hospital for specialized care.

In light of the structural dangers posed by the incident, the county has advised residents of nearby buildings exhibiting cracks and signs of weakness to evacuate. “The nearby buildings have exhibited signs of structural failures, and tenants have since been evacuated,” the County Government of Nairobi confirmed, prioritizing the safety of its residents.

County officials have vowed to hold accountable those responsible for the building’s collapse, indicating that the owner would face arrest and court proceedings. “We will scale up building audits on all illegal developments in the Kahawa West area,” stated Patrick Mbogo, the County Executive Committee Member for Built Environment and Urban Planning.

Nairobi City County remains committed to recovery efforts, actively digging through the rubble in search of any remaining individuals. “Operations are still ongoing. Further progress will be provided as the recovery efforts continue,” a county official assured, underscoring the urgency of the situation.
