Govt Invites Kenyans to Nominate Persons to be Declared National Heroes

The government, through the National Heroes Council, is reaching out to the public for nominations of individuals who could be honored as national heroes.

In a public notice published on MyGov on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, the Council shared that they are now accepting proposals for nominations. These can come from individuals, organizations, institutions, or even groups of people.

“Pursuant to provisions of Section 22 of the Act, the public is hereby notified that the Council is calling for the submission of proposals for the nomination of suitable persons to be recommended for declaration as national heroes,” read the notice in part.

The council has shared that all completed nominations need to be submitted within 21 days from the notice date, which means they must be in by July 21, 2025, just in time for this year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations on October 20, 2025.

To be considered, nominees should have made selfless contributions or sacrifices for the country in one of the 14 recognized areas outlined in the First Schedule of the Act.

These areas include: the liberation struggle, spiritual leadership, indigenous knowledge, cultural values and practices, arts, sports, scholarship, professionalism and research, peace-making, statesmanship, entrepreneurship and industry, philanthropy, human rights, national cohesion and integration, and environmental conservation.

The nominees

Nominees are expected to reflect the national values highlighted in Article 10 of the Constitution, which include selflessness, courage, innovation, discipline, and perseverance.

You can find the nomination forms on the Council’s website at www.heroes.go.ke. They can be submitted via email to nominations@heroes.go.ke, delivered by hand to their offices, or sent through the post office.

The National Heroes Council was created under the Kenya Heroes Act, No. 5 of 2014 (the Act). Its role is to identify, select, and ensure the recognition of our national heroes.

During the 2024 Mashujaa Day celebrations, President William Ruto honored nearly 142 heroes across 14 categories, including sports, philanthropy, statesmanship, and indigenous cultures.

Currently, some of the perks that these heroes enjoy include receiving commendation certificates, medals, having statues and monuments built in their honor, and having books written to celebrate their achievements.
