Government Opens Enrollment for Mechanics, Electrical Work, Tailoring & Other Vocational Programs
The Kenyan government has introduced a range of vocational training initiatives, aiming to provide young people with essential skills in high-demand sectors. These programs span mechanics, electrical work, garment making, and livestock management.
Offered through the Kenya Industrial Training Institute (KITI) and associated centers under the State Department for Livestock Development, these courses are designed to significantly increase the number of Kenyans participating in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).
A recent announcement by the Ministry of Trade detailed various KITI programs. These include a three-month Motor Vehicle Mechanics course at Nakuru and Eldoret campuses, requiring a KCSE D grade, and Domestic Electrical Installation courses in Nairobi and Mombasa, needing a D+ qualification. Construction sector options feature Building Technology and Welding and Fabrication.
Short-term specialized courses now include Juice Making, Barista Training, and Yoghurt and Jam Making. The food sector also offers condensed Barista and Bread Making courses.
Agricultural programs, managed by the State Department for Livestock Development, include a six-month Artisan Course in Dairy Farm Management and a two-year Certificate in Animal Health and Production. Meat processing options include a six-month Meat Inspection Course, with advancement to Abattoir Instructors and Meat Grading certifications, plus a one-year Certificate in Apiculture.
Advanced diploma programs are available in Animal Health and Production, Leather Technology, and Dairy Production and Processing. The building sector offers Diploma in Civil Engineering modules and Plumbing Basic, while fashion students can pursue Diploma in Fashion Design or Craft Certificates in Garment Making.
Technology training includes a Diploma in ICT, Computer Applications, and AutoCAD/Inventor/Civil 3D courses. Electrical programs feature Electrical Installation training and CCTV/Electric Fence Installation.
Mechanical engineering offers Diploma modules and a Welding and Fabrication course, while food sector trainees can enroll in Food and Beverage Production and cake-making courses. Entrepreneurship programs include Business Plan Writing and Basic Accounting and Management Skills.
Applicants must submit academic certificates, a national ID, a birth certificate, a passport photo, and a non-refundable application fee. KITI applications are due by 22 April 2025, with programs starting in May 2025 across 18 institutes. Agricultural course applications are due by 23 May 2025, and artisan course applications by 17 April 2025.
