Governer Sakaja Attacked with Stones During Visit to Fire-Ravaged Toi Market
Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja found himself in a precarious situation on Saturday when a group of irate Kibera residents began pelting him with stones during his visit to Toi Market.
The market had recently experienced a devastating fire that claimed four lives and destroyed several stalls and homes.
The incident unfolded rapidly, with videos obtained by skynews.co.ke capturing the chaotic scene. Angry residents could be seen hurling stones at the governor while chanting his name.
The situation escalated to the point where Sakaja’s security detail had to intervene, shielding him and hastily ushering him away from the area.
The governor was quickly whisked into his car and driven off, escaping the volatile crowd.
The residents’ frustration was palpable as they accused Governor Sakaja of poor county management. The governor’s visit to the market was initially intended to show solidarity with the affected traders and to promise compensation through county disaster funds. However, the residents’ anger overshadowed his efforts.
The fire that sparked the incident occurred early Saturday morning, around 4 am, reportedly due to an electrical fault.
The blaze ravaged the market, destroying all business structures and rendering the area inaccessible. The tragic fire resulted in the loss of four lives, as confirmed by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna.
“We had another fire at Toi Market this morning. I have spoken to area MP Peter Orero who confirms four people tragically lost their lives,” Senator Sifuna stated. The senator expressed his condolences to the affected families and businesses and pledged support to help them recover.
“As the leadership in Nairobi, we stand with you and will do our best not only to help restore your businesses but to make sure we put an end to these incessant fires in our markets,” Sifuna reassured.
The violent reaction to Governor Sakaja’s visit highlights the growing frustration among Kibera residents over recurring fires and perceived inadequacies in the county’s disaster response.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by Nairobi’s leadership in addressing the needs and concerns of its citizens.
