Gachagua’s Powerful Message to Supporters Following High-Profile Embu Event Snub
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua found himself in an awkward spotlight during the Episcopal ordination and installation of Rt. Rev. Peter Kimani as Bishop of Embu Diocese on Saturday, November 16.
The high-profile event, graced by President William Ruto, former President Uhuru Kenyatta, and Interior CS Kithure Kindiki, turned into a bittersweet occasion for Gachagua.
In a striking moment highlighting his diminished political clout, Gachagua was seated in a separate tent from the VIP dignitaries. His placement alongside allies, including Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba, contrasted starkly with the camaraderie among other leaders on the main dais.
Adding to the snub, Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire bypassed Gachagua in her lineup of speakers, denying him an opportunity to address the crowd.
Gachagua, however, remained composed, reflecting his earlier sentiments that people from his region often opt for silence in the face of adversity. Despite being overlooked by the political elite, the former Deputy President was embraced by the ordinary citizens of Embu, who gave him a rousing reception.
Taking to social media, Gachagua expressed his gratitude for the warmth shown by the crowd. “Thank you so much, the people of Embu, for the love and warm reception. I love you too,” he wrote, sharing a video of the thunderous applause that greeted him.
Meanwhile, President Ruto’s address steered clear of any mention of Gachagua, focusing instead on matters raised by the clergy, including the contentious Social Health Authority issue. “The other day I got greetings from the council of bishops in the form of a letter. So before tomorrow, I will look for a Catholic church to attend so that my week can be complete,” Ruto remarked.
He assured the clergy that Universal Health Coverage would remain a priority, promising, “There are a few mistakes, but we shall correct those mistakes.”
Despite his assurances, the President faced jeers from sections of the Embu crowd, signaling public discontent over unresolved issues.
As Gachagua reflects on a turbulent month since his impeachment, the Embu event underscored both his challenges and enduring connection with grassroots supporters.
