Gachagua Slams Kindiki’s Silence on Key Issues After Replacing Him as Deputy President
In a bold and candid remark, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has openly criticized his successor, Kithure Kindiki, questioning his commitment to representing the interests of ordinary Kenyans.
Speaking during a church service, Gachagua expressed his doubts about Kindiki’s ability to effectively advocate for the people, particularly within the confines of the Kenya Kwanza administration.
“I want to ask our government: We were elected by the people, so let us listen to them. I was the only one speaking in the government. The one who was given my seat can’t speak because he is the president’s employee. There is nothing he can do. They say what the president says,” Gachagua boldly stated.
The former deputy president’s criticism comes in the wake of Kindiki’s appointment by President William Ruto, a move that Gachagua believes restricts the new deputy president’s capacity to challenge the head of state’s policies and decisions.
Gachagua suggested that unlike elected leaders who have the mandate to represent their constituencies, Kindiki, as an appointed official, is bound to follow the president’s direction without question.
Gachagua also took issue with the passing of the controversial Finance Bill 2024, which he claimed was met with public disapproval.
Despite widespread protests from Kenyans, the bill was approved by lawmakers, and Gachagua, who was vocal in his opposition, revealed that he had warned the president against pushing the bill forward.
“I told the president that Kenyans want nothing to do with the Finance Bill 2024. I pleaded with him not to push Kenyans as they would cause us trouble. The president, however, disagreed and said that we can’t do what is popular, we do what is right,” Gachagua said, reflecting on the tense discussions with the president over the issue.
The former deputy president further urged the Kenya Kwanza administration to listen more closely to the people and prioritize their concerns in decision-making.
The political tension between Gachagua and Kindiki was also highlighted at a funeral service for the late MCA Mark Wainaina, where mourners displayed discontent toward Kindiki’s tribute.
The deputy president’s representative at the funeral faced heckling from the crowd, who interrupted his attempts to deliver Kindiki’s speech.
Despite the protests, the tribute was eventually read with the help of a clergy member, who calmed the crowd and facilitated the delivery of Kindiki’s words directly to the family.
As the political landscape shifts, Gachagua’s comments add fuel to ongoing debates about the effectiveness of Kenya Kwanza’s leadership and the ability of appointed officials to engage with the public in meaningful ways.
