Gachagua Promises Kalonzo 10 Million Votes to Oust Ruto
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has announced the formation of a new political alliance aimed at unseating President William Ruto in the 2027 elections.
Speaking in Makueni on December 18, Gachagua revealed that Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka would be the coalition’s candidate.
Despite his impeachment and ineligibility for public office, Gachagua remains influential. He highlighted Kalonzo’s historical support for Mt Kenya, particularly during former President Mwai Kibaki’s administration.
Gachagua emphasized that Kalonzo’s assistance to Kibaki in 2007, during a challenging period, has created a debt of gratitude that Mt Kenya must repay.
“We remember in 2007 when Kibaki faced challenges. He won the presidential vote but lacked the majority in the National Assembly. It is Kalonzo who came and helped Kibaki in his government where he was the vice president, and it is in their regime that Kenya did well economically since independence. So as Mt Kenya, we owe Kalonzo, and we will pay,” Gachagua said.
Gachagua is banking on numerical strength to secure victory. He urged the Ukambani electorate to register massively, targeting 4 million votes, while projecting that Mt Kenya will have 10 million votes by 2027.
“Numbers is the only trick here. I beseech you Ukambani people to register as voters. Leadership is found through votes. We need 50% plus one, and you have to add your own. We want all the youths to register and have between 3.5 to 4 million votes. In Mt Kenya, we will push to 10 million,” he stated.
The former deputy president disclosed ongoing discussions with Kalonzo and other potential allies to strategize for their coalition.
He expressed disillusionment with President Ruto, accusing him of betraying Mt Kenya, which led to Gachagua’s impeachment two months ago. The new coalition aims to focus on economic revival and the elimination of deceitful politics.
However, political analysts warn that it is premature to predict the 2027 political landscape. While Gachagua claims unified support from Mt Kenya, the region’s political future remains uncertain.
